Hag 252 modifications

  • Hello there,

My name is Cem and I am a model railroader from Turkey. I mostly use and collect Märklin and Hag.

Recently I bought a Hag 252 Special Edition SOB triebwagen with factory installed decoder. But there are quite a few things I'm not very happy with:

    - Motor is too noisy (3 pole)
    - Movements are very abrupt
    - Lights are too bright

So I plan the following modifications:

    - Install 5 pole motor and permanent magnet
    - Change to a recent decoder
    - Use resistors to dim the lights a bit

I wonder if there's any conversion kits available from Hag (or another producer that would fit Hag motors) with 5 pole rotor and permanent magnet? Also, I noticed that the traction tires are very hard, is that the same in all Hag models or is it because the model is old?

    Best regards,

    Cem.

  • Cem, I'll perform a summarized translation for our mostly German speaking readers:

  • Hello Cem

    welcome to the HAG-forum.

First of all: there is no 5-pole-rotor that fits to the socalled "sawmotor" of the old HAG-EMU Type 150ff (like the SOB 252). The original motor ist noisy at all. Maybe there exist some brushless-motor-kits, maybe by SB-Modellbau or any other specialist, but I dont know about this.

In my opinion it is nearly impossible to drive this motor smooth and softly like a standard-DC-Motor like the HAG 88er or any 5-pole-engine. I tried with Uhlenbrock 76500, 76400 and with Esu Lopi2 and 3 and I never got any satisfiing result after hours and hours of CV-trying - btw: I just use Motorola-system, I don´t habe any experiences with DCC.

If You have problems with the hard traction tyres (they get hard, when they are old - and then the traction power is very small ) - ask the HAG-factory-Outlet-shop in Mörschwil, the help fast and serious...

    Hope, I could help you....

  • Rüdiger hi,

    Thank you for the info.

So that it is impossible to run this model smoothly with original parts, what would you suggest; should I keep it as it is, or should I try other modifications? I mean would any modifications degrade it's value?

    Grüssen,

    Cem.

P.S. If anyone having difficulty writing in English please do so in German, I can always use babelfish translation.

P.S.S. Unholz, thanks for the translation :D

  • Thats a Question of preferences: if the driving conditions are less important than originallity, let it be. If your focus is on the best driving conditions, look for the brushless kit....but in this case, the changings at the chassis are irreversible.

increase in Value and Model railway is just a myth....

Hımm, so this means that there is enough models for the mrr guys like us? :D

As for the modification; I will try to figure out something else ... I will let you know tomorrow - I first have to consult some friends for feasibility.

    Cem.

  • Cem, if you can use Babelfish translation, we have a thread here dealing with digitalization of this railcar type:

A replacement motor by the German manufacturer SB is also mentioned there; here is the appropriate direct link:
